Fiona Brands

Fiona Brands is an award-winning editor based in London. Originally from Germany, she now lives in England where she works across a wide range of films and TV shows.

She is a member of BAFTA, British Film Editors BFE and Bundesverband Filmschnitt Editor in Germany.

She first came to the UK to complete a Master’s degree in Editing at The National Film and Television School in Beaconsfield. Her NFTS graduation film "Wild Horses" (Dir: Rory Stewart) premiered at the 70th Festival de Cannes 2017 in competition in the Cinéfondation Selection, was selected for Edinburgh Film Festival, Encounters, Aesthetica and Raindance 2017 and has won the postgraduate drama award at the 23rd Royal Television Society awards 2018. 

She was selected for Berlinale Talents at the 68th Berlin International Film Festival 2018 and was a member of BAFTA Crew from 2017-2021 in London.

She's been awarded the “Filmstiftung NRW Award - Best Newcomer Editing” at the 26th German Camera Award 2016 for her work on "The Ballad of Ella Plummhoff“ (Dir: Barbara Kronenberg P: KHM Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln).

Starting her career as an editor in Cologne she finished her bachelor's degree in Editing Picture and Sound at the ifs international filmschule köln in 2012.

From 2010-2015 she worked as a freelance editor and assistant editor in Cologne on numerous feature films, TV films and shows.

Feature films she’s edited include the 2013 film "My Brother’s Keeper" (Dir: Maximilian Leo P: Augenschein Filmproduktion) which was nominated at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival 2014 in the category Perspektive Deutsches Kino (Prospect German Cinema) and for Best First Feature.
Another feature “Granada Nights” (Dir. Abid Khan) was selected for Edinburgh International Film Festival Works in Progress 2019, won Best Feature Film at Barnes Film Festival 2020 and had it’s UK release in 2021.

Fiona's most recently edited feature film “Layla”, (Dir: Amrou Al-Kadhi) premiered at 2024 Sundance Film Festival and was selected to open the 2024 BFI Flare Film Festival. The film about the budding romance between an Arab drag queen (Bilal Hasna) and a strait-laced marketing executive (Louis Greatorex) is backed by Film4 and BFI and produced by Savannah James-Bayly. Nina Yang Bongiovi via Significant Films, Farhana Bhula for FIlm4 and Kristin Irving for BFI are executive producers.

Over the years her trajectory in TV has led her from dark, comedic crime drama “Queens of Mystery” (Dir: Theresa Varga) for Acorn TV via editing the final episodes of “The Rising”, a mystery-sci-fi show for Sky, directed by Carl Tibbetts to “Ten Pound Poms”, a TV period drama for BBC One and Eleven Film production about English immigrants to Australia in the 50s with Australian director Ana Kokkinos. “Ten Pound Poms” was awarded two Golden Nymph awards at the 2023 Monte Carlo Television Festival for Best Series and Best Actor for main actor Warren Brown as Terry Roberts.

She recently finished the edit on the final three episodes of “Truelove”, (Dir: Carl Tibbetts) a romantic crime thriller for Channel 4, that stars Lindsay Duncan and Clarke Peters. It is produced by Clerkenwell Films and created by Charlie Covell who’s other collaborations include “The End of the Fucking World”.

Currently she is working on season 5 of “Slow Horses” (Dir: Saul Metzstein) which stars Gary Oldman, Jack Lowden and Kristin Scott Thomas and is produced by Apple TV+, See-Saw Films, 60Forty Films and Pretty Pictures.

Fiona Brands ist eine zur Zeit in London lebende Editorin. Gebürtig aus Deutschland, graduierte sie als Master of Arts in Editing an der National Film and Television School in Beaconsfield, England.

Fiona begann ihr Karriere als Editorin in Köln, wo sie 2012 den Bachelor of Arts im Studienfach Editing Bild und Ton an der ifs international filmschule köln erfolgreich abschloss.

Von 2010 bis 2015 arbeitet sie in Köln als Freelance Editorin und Schnittassistenz an zahlreichen Spielfilmen, TV Filmen und Serien.

Zu den Langfilmen, die Fiona geschnitten hat, zählt "Hüter meines Bruders" (88’ R: Maximilian Leo P: Augenschein Filmproduktion). Der Film wurde auf den 64.Internationalen Filmfestspielen Berlin in der Kategorie Perspektive Deutsches Kino und Bester Erstlingsfilm nominiert.
Ein weiterer Spielfilm, “Granada Nights” (R. Abid Khan) wurde für das Edinburgh International Film Festival Works in Progress Programm 2019 ausgewählt, gewann Best Feature Film beim Barnes Film Festival 2020 und hatte seine UK Kinoauswertung 2021.

Der zuletzt von Fiona geschnittene Kinofilm “Layla” (R: Amrou Al-Kadhi) hatte seine Premiere auf dem Sundance Film Festival 2024 und wurde als Eröffnungsfilm des 2024 BFI Flare Festival ausgewählt. Der Film über die angehende Liebesbeziehung zwischen einer arabischen Drag Queen (Bilal Hasna) und einem systemkonformen Marketing Executive (Louis Greatorex) wird unter anderem von Film4 und BFI finanziert und von Savannah James-Bayly von Fox Cub Films produziert. Nina Yang Bongiovi via Significant Films, Farhana Bhula für Film4 und Kristin Irving für BFI sind executive producers.

Im Laufe der Jahre führte sie ihre Laufbahn im Fernsehschnitt vom schwarzen, komödiantischen Krimidrama “Queens of Mystery” (R: Theresa Varga) für Acorn TV über den Schnitt der finalen zwei Episoden der Mystery-Sci-Fi show “The Rising” (R: Carl Tibbetts) für Sky zur Serie “Ten Pound Poms”, ein TV drama for BBC One und eine Eleven Film Produktion über englische Immigranten nach Australien in the 50ern.
